First of all, I would like to offer heaps of praise and thanks to all the wonderful volunteers we have at Beaver Park, who have helped to make another brilliant season at our club. Whether a coach, physio, volunteer, bar or kitchen worker, manager, groundsman, kit washer, or even a boring committee member, we know that your time is precious, and willingly offering it up to your club is massively appreciated, thank you, very, very much!
The players also need much praise and congratulations too, after all, it is the playing and development of rugby that we all support and they have certainly delivered an exciting season at all levels, and helped the club continue to grow and develop this great sport.
At a senior level; the 1st Team finished 4th with 18 more points than last season, only one win away from promotion, and one win away from a Yorkshire Shield Final. The 2nd Team also finished 4th but went one step better, reaching and then winning the Yorkshire East Merit League Playoff Final in a rather feisty encounter against Marist. Last season we resurrected the 3rd Team who have continued playing their attractive brand of ‘social rugby’ and numbers joining in have increased.
The Colts where crowned Champions in their Yorkshire Conference and were beaten narrowly in the Yorkshire Cup Final. The Ladies & Girls Squad continues to grow, in only our second season thanks to the efforts on more committed volunteers.
At a Mini & Junior Level it is very pleasing that numbers of players is growing, and that we have representation at every single age group, and expanding! On the 5th June 2018 your club is launching Didi Rugby starting at 4pm for 18-36 month, 4.40pm for 3-4 years and 5.20pm for the oldies, 4-6 years old! This is more about providing a new service for our members, rather than recruitment, but you never know, there could be a little Phil Duboulay in there!
Staying with the Juniors, the under 16’s were crowned Champions of the highly rated Harrogate Festival, which was a particularly fitting way to say farewell to Head Coach, Mike Baker. The Under 14’s also were successful in winning the Yorkshire Plate, beating a highly fancied Ripon team in the final, and also boast the clubs highest try scorer, but more of that shortly.
There have been some other notable highlights this season, such as; a number of our Junior players being selected to join the England Rugby Development Player Programme; a record breaking £1660 raised from a very successful Ladies Day for Her Breast Friends; the launch of the Vice Presidents Membership, raising more than £3000 for the club; the Lee Morley Memorial Match which also raised over £3000 for Ward 29 at Castle Hill Hospital; the CALM Charity Match at which we raised over £1500 for the charity that helps young men suffering with depression; Luke Hazell being selected to start at full back for the Yorkshire under 20’s and playing in the final at Twickenham no less; Emma Bryans being nominated for RFU volunteer of the Year; and of course Alfred, the guy with the hat from the 2nd team, being 2 questions off from being the Mastermind Champion!
Just a handful of things from another great season at your Beaver Park, we should all be proud.
We also saw some very special weddings, besides Harry & Megan’s Wedding Reception (late booking), we also recognise Beckie and Jess making the ultimate sacrifice to Kris and Phil, who now join a long list of rugby widows! But, are even more now, part of the BRUFC family!
We have some up and coming events to look forward to as well; Open Mic Night on the 1st June; pre-season training starts on the 5th June for senior players & Colts; AGM on the 11th June; Senior 7’s Tournament Inaugural event on the 21st July; Family Fun Day on the 11th August; a Pre-Season Fundraising Dinner, likely to be on the 18th August. We will also be having a weekend of renovation and decorating to get the club into shape for September, which will be on us in no time!
Finally, the small matter of you was the leading try scorer for the whole club, well, from Juniors, Colts and Seniors (where it gets competitive!). So, who really is the top dog? We have had a shield made, that will be awarded every season for this new award designed to bring some healthy competition, and to build relations across our many teams. The stats are below, and we know must be accurate! Congratulations to Charlie Carling from this seasons successful under 14’s team, who scored an unrivalled 33 tries! We will be catching up with you soon Charlie to award you the shield. We had 116 different try scorers across 7 different squads this season, I have only published the top 60. I think our future……is bright.
The very best regards to you all, have a lovely summer, and thank you again for your support, see you for the 2018/19 season!
