Dinnington YC) - Won 0-32

Match Report

BEVERLEY Under-14’s came away from Dinnington with a superb 32-0 Yorkshire Cup victory.
Playing up the hill in the first half, Beverley fought hard to gain control over a home side boasting a size advantage in the forwards and they gained the upper hand when excellent rucking from the back row of Eagle, Rodgers and Bosworth established a platform for the backs which Scanlan and Ashley exploited to send Dugdale powering over the line.
Beverley secured the ball from the restart and great work from the front row produced quick ball for number 8 Rodgers in the centre. His intelligent use of the boot which any outside half would have been proud of, took play to within 10 yards of the Dinnington line. This time the defence held until Eagle - running hard in support - crossed for Beverley’s second.
With two minutes of the half remaining the Beverley centre pairing of Rial and Cowey combined to great effect. Rial made the initial line break before offloading to his centre partner with telepathic accuracy. Cowey got behind the Dinnington defence and the scramble that ensued came to a head when Beverley winger Webb produced a magical step to beat the lone defender to cross for the third.
The second half saw the forward battle continue with a resurgent Dinnington working hard at the breakdown. The Beverley pack also worked hard with some notable tackling at the fringes from Dealtry-Todd, Hopson, Reid and Spence. The Beverley coaches were concerned as, with only one substitute, this attritional rugby did not look good for their side, as Dinnington again brought on three fresh forwards.
They need not have worried as the intelligent play of Scanlan saw the ball spread at every opportunity. With the wingers continuing to penetrate, it was only a matter of time until Webb crossed for his second and Rodgers for his first of the day.
It was fitting that Scanlan was to find himself on the score sheet when, facing a centre defence used to moving wide, he sold a dummy, accelerated through the gap and found himself crossing under the posts untouched.
