Match Report

The Beaver Park pitch was in surprisingly good condition as Moortown kicked off towards the Clubhouse end and immediately set up an attack down the left flank. However, the Beverley forwards turned the ball over and a great passing movement from midfield allowed lock Adam Corkish to score an early try after 3 minutes which Phil Duboulay duly converted (7-0).

Two minutes later a forward drive took the Beavers up into the Town 22 and scrum half Will Harrison scuttled over for a try, again converted by Phil Duboulay (14-0). Moortown were looking surprisingly sluggish in the face of the Beavers onslaught and after a further 5 minutes they were unable to stop another Beverley drive and Isaac Keighley touching down for the third try in ten minutes (19-0).

At last Moortown shook off their lethargy and some slick passing amongst their backs allowed a shrewd cross kick from the left to the unmarked right winger who made no mistake with a smart try (19-5).

Back came Beverley who were playing some scintillating rugby and after 24 minutes Steve Wiggill went in for their fourth try to secure the bonus point. Phil Duboulay converted to make it 26-5.

Another spell of great rugby by the Beverley backs allowed Will Harrison to go over for his second try (31-5) and things were looking comfortable for the Beavers. However, almost on the stroke of half time, a forward drive from a lineout by Town allowed their hooker to touch down under the posts for a try which was converted to make the score at half time 31 – 12.

Almost straight from the kickoff in the second half Will Harrison scored his third and Beverley’s sixth try to make it 36-12. Town hit back after a further 5 minutes with a try from a fly kick through (36-17). At this point the Beavers were reduced to 14 men when Alex McPeake was yellow carded for a technical offence but they managed the ten minutes well with some fine defence and did not concede,  although Town spent most of them camped in Beverley’s 22. However something had to give and, after 26 minutes, Town gained a bonus point with a pushover try in the corner to make the score 36-22 and remind the Beavers that they still had work to do.

Beverley responded well to score a smart try by Raymond Coates from a forward drive  which Phil Duboulay converted (43-22) and rounded off matters with an even smarter try through Will Turnbull after a slick move through the backs to make the final score 48-22.

This was a thoroughly competent performance from Beverley against a slow starting but solid looking Moortown side. Will Harrison was chosen as Beverley’s man of the match.
