Match Report

This was a hard fought, scrappy affair with Beverley, for the second week running fielding a very young side. Once again the youngsters performed very well against the experienced Middlesbrough side but unfortunately lost left winger Alex Hodgkinson with a nasty looking head and shoulder injury after only 5 minutes. He was replaced by Jack Howdle.

After 10 minutes a fine break by James Graham lead to a try by Phil Duboulay which he then converted to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead. Beverley were dominating the game in the opening exchanges and further increased their lead after 20 minutes with a try from Dale Hodgson following a break by Phil Duboulay, who converted it to make the score 14-0.

Beverley inexplicably went off the boil and lots of errors started to creep into their play. Bad decision making and sloppy ball retention allowed Boro to take control of the game and after a yellow card for Dale Hodgson following a series of penalties they switched the play across the pitch from right wing to left and Sean Moloney went over for a try in the corner to reduce the arrears to 14-5.

As half time approached Boro were applying all the pressure on the Beverley line and gained their reward with another try under the posts which was converted to make the half time score 14-12.

The second half started in much the same manner as the first finished, with Middlesbrough now dominating and looking increasingly threatening. Despite being awarded three very kickable penalties as a result of their continuing dominance, they were that confident by now that they spurned them in favour of trying for tries.

At last Beverley came through their sticky patch and started to play the rugby that we know they can play. On 65 minutes Phil Duboulay scored his second try which he converted to increase the lead to 21-12 and Beverley supporters started to breathe a little easier. The last 15 minutes were spent looking for the try which would secure the bonus point and this thankfully came in the last minute through Luke Hazell. Phil Duboulay duly added the extras to finish the scoring at 28-12.

This was a match in three parts. The first 20 and the last 20 minutes were all Beverley and the middle 40 all Middlesbrough who will consider themselves a little unlucky losers.

Next weekend the Beavers travel to Halifax to meet Old Rishworthians. This will be a renewal of old acquaintances as it is a long time since we met them.
