Under 18 Colts Malton (L) Home - Won 52-0

Match Report

BEVERLEY RUFC Under-18 Colts defeated a weakened Malton & Norton side 52-0 to maintain their position at the top of the Yorkshire League Conference C table.

The visitors arrived two players down which necessitated in Beverley also removing a player which led to a patchy start by both sides before the game settled with Ben Fennell putting the home side ahead after six minutes. An Alex Morris try out wide, converted by Alex Hodgkinson, increased the Beverley lead but Malton were keeping the game honest and open as the Beavers looked a little ponderous in defence.

However, the pace was lifted when a charging run from Hodgkinson saw him link with Jack Gill and Bailey Wood before feeding Charlie Rawlins who ran in under the posts. Hodgkinson converted. Skipper Will Dobson was now getting a swifter response from his forwards with Ifan Downey and Charlie Fish working hard to secure decent ball and Olly Mason and Tom Jackson punching holes down the middle.   Two minutes later Hodgkinson fed Brandon Leggett for another try before adding the extras. Malton were not out of this game and their excellent forward play was a constant threat but it was another try for Morris, converted by Hodgkinson, that ended the second half at 31-0.

Beverley were well aware of the danger of a Malton comeback and began the second half in a more clinical fashion. Flanker Rhys Innes and Theo Richardson  began to make yards in the loose and first Morris – completing a birthday hat-trick – and then Rawlins crossed for tries before Hodgkinson, who made all three conversions,  weaved his way over from outside the 22.

That ended the official game with 20 minutes left but to Malton’s immense credit they agreed to continue on as a friendly/training session and promptly barged their way over in the corner for a well-deserved try. The game ended with an enjoyable end-to-end pattern and further tries for Rawlins and Joe Barrett, converted by Hodgkinson.

Beverley now face a trip to title rivals Scunthorpe Caparo Colts on Sunday in their final league game before Christmas.
