Under 18 Colts Pocklington (Yorkshire Cup) Home - Drawn 12-12

Match Report

BEVERLEY RUFC Under-18 Colts opened their season with a frustrating ‘losing’  12-12 draw at home to close rivals Pocklington in the first round of the Yorkshire Cup.
Last season’s U17 Cup finalists were beaten by the cup regulation that drawn first round games are awarded to the away team if the scores – and method of scoring – are equal. Sadly they were but, in fairness, the visitors probably deserved to take the win.
The home side were pushed back from the off after a mistake in clearing the kick off and only some stern defence from the likes of Liam Johnson, Ben Fennell and Spencer Roberts prevented Pocklington from crossing their line. So it was against the run of play when swift handling sent Brandon Leggett arcing outside the visiting defence after 11 minutes to put Beverley ahead with an unconverted try.
Pocklington were rightly annoyed and used their forwards to gain good position and ball from which they drew level four minutes later, again with an unconverted try and the game remained level at half time.
The Beavers were second best at many of the rucks throughout and the lack of clean possession meant attacks were largely built from scraps. Centre Mobolaji Abayomi made big inroads on his debut with some powerful runs but was often left unsupported while excellent work in the lineout by Rhys Innes failed to generate momentum at vital points. Ifan Downey and Alex Morris battled away in the tight while Charlie Rawlins and Bailey Wood looked dangerous on the rare occasions they found space.
However, the Beverley spirit could not be faulted and they regained the lead when Adam Hewitson intercepted a Pocklington pass just outside his 22 and ran the length of the field for a try which he converted. The visitors bounced back again to beat a flat-footed defence and notch a converted try which proved enough to progress despite missing two easy penalties either side.
With no little irony, Beverley, who saw Will Dobson and Olly Mason join the absent Theo Richardson and Alex Hodgkinson on the injury list, now face Morley – the team that beat them in last year’s U17 final – in the first round of Yorkshire Plate on Sunday.
