Beverley Under-14’s hosted Old Rishworthians at Beaver Park running out close but deserved 24-19 winners.
From the kick off, Beverley quickly got into their stride with the forwards making a number of strong drives up the centre of the pitch. The visitors defended well, but the attacking lines of the hosts started to create gaps in their defence for the Beverley backs to exploit.
Some slick handling brought the Beverley full back Ryan Westerman into the line at pace, breaking the defence line and scoring under the posts after five minutes.
From the restart, Old Rish found their feet but quick thinking from the Beverley fly half Max Bayes saw him switch play and step inside a couple of opposing players to offload to inside centre Jack Charles who sprinted 30 metres to score Beverley’s second try after 12 minutes.
Beverley couldn’t relax as Old Rish came back at them once again. The next 10 minutes could’ve seen tries from both sides, but it was Beverley again that gained the advantage and saw outside centre Alex Argent-Moss beat his opposite number for pace around the outside and score in the corner with one minute left in the half.
The start of the second half saw a resurgence by the visitors and a lack of discipline from Beverley. Old Rish broke through Beverley’s defence and scored three tries in a 15-minute period to give them a two-point lead with 10 minutes to go.
Beverley managed to gather themselves and showed a brilliant desire to drag the game back their way. From the restart, Beverley forced their opponents deep into their own half.
The resulting play saw stand-in scrum half Archie Harwood draw a number of players and make a perfectly timed pass to full-back Westerman who cantered in for his second try.
With five minutes to go, poor discipline from the restart gave Beverley a penalty which they kicked for touch in the Old Rish 22. . With only 1 minute remaining, the visitors desperately needed to break out of their 22 but the Beverley defence didn’t give them an inch and forced them back into their in-goal area to secure victory.
