Under 14 (School Year 9) Selby Home - Won 18-0

Match Report

BEVERLEY Under-14’s  entertained Selby in round three of the Yorkshire Cup running out 18-0 winners.

Selby won the toss and chose to play with the low sun behind them. From the kick off Beverley applied good pressure on Selby and forced errors. Handling in the ruck was penalised and saw Beverley kick the first points of the matchfor  3-0.

Selby bounced back and pushed Beverley back into their own 22. However, foul play at the breakdown saw Selby penalised and relieve the pressure on Beverley.

Beverley then camped in the Selby half.  A number of penalties were conceded by both teams due to handling in the ruck. This meant Beverley kept letting Selby off the hook. However,  the first try finally came after 15 minutes. Beverley set up quick ball from the breakdown, followed by quick hands in the backs to see the winger, Alex Argent-Moss score in the corner. Unfortunately, the try was the end of his participation in the game having picked up an injury when scoring. The conversion was missed.

Selby again pressed hard from the restart. A number of strong drives from their forwards saw them get into Beverley’s 22. It looked like Selby must score, but the Beverley defence stood strong and forced a mistake. The try eluded Selby.

Beverley played some expansive rugby and saw a number of excellent off loads. They were unlucky on at least 2 occasions to miss out on tries. The last pass not going to hand or passed forward.

Half time and Beverley were in the lead 8-0

After the break Beverley’s full back (Ryan Westerman) and centre (Jack Charles) started making decisive ground through strong runs and great lines. A few handling errors stopped Beverley converting possession into points. However, Beverley’s scrum was working brilliantly and driving Selby backwards every time. This set up perfect platforms for the backs. Strong running and inter passing saw Ryan Westerman break the Selby defence and score after 10 minutes into the second half.

Selby’s heads dropped a bit and Beverley were hungry for more. Again, the pack worked hard to get clean ball which allowed the backs to tear into Selby. Good passing again saw winger Joe Coates score the final try.  Selby didn’t recover from this score and while they fought hard, Beverley defended well and didn’t give them a chance of scoring again in the second half.

Tackle of the week was made by Sam Cowey with man of the match Ryan Westerman.
