Beverley RUFC Under-13’s travelled to local rivals Hull Ionians for the second round of the Yorkshire Cup emerging with an impressive 20-15 victory.
From the start it was clear this would be a very closely fought contest. The Ionians forwards were very strong and determined not to give Beverley any ball. At the break down it was fierce, with both sides matching each other. The first 10 minutes went quickly but with no score on the board. Both sides making breaks, but the defences held.
There was finally a breakthrough for Beverley in the 15th minute when they put pressure on the Ionians backs in their own 22. Dropped ball led to a kick through try for Beverley.
Beverley were then on top for the next five minutes and managed to score a well worked try by the full back in the corner.
Credit to Ionians, who started applying real pressure. The forwards driving Beverley back into their own 22. The pressure finally allowed Ionians to cross the line for a well deserved try right at the end of the first half.
Ionians started the second half as they’d finished the first. Lots of pressure quickly resulted in a try to Ionians. With the scores level it was hard to see who would win. Beverley started putting some good phases together, then from a set piece the Beverley inside centre ran a fantastic line and a perfectly timed pass from the stand off set him up for a clear run to the line.
Ionians came back again, driving Beverley back and scoring under the posts.
The game really opened up and more opportunities came, but it was Beverley that reacted quickest from broken play and allowed the second row to break a tackle and scored the winning try for Beverley.
A hugely entertaining match played in good spirit from both side with tries for Beverley from Tom Rea (2), Ryan Westerman and Alex Argent-Moss, who was also man of the match.
Pass of the week went to Max Bayes while Sam Davies made the tackle of the game.
