Beverley RUFC Under-13's secured a thrilling 40-35 home win over West Park Leeds with a last minute try which warmed those watching on a cold, miserable day.
Beverley won the toss and elected to kick. Immediately the home side were on the front foot and applied pressure to the WPL forwards resulting in quick turnover ball.
This allowed the Beverley backs to pass down the line and score in the corner with less than 2 minutes on the clock. From the restart, Beverley again piled on the pressure and managed a second try within five minutes.
The second try spurred WPL into life and they started to retain ball and recycled quickly. Beverley’s defence held up well, but from broken play their captain had some space and didn’t need to be asked twice.
Great speed, combined with being the biggest player on the pitch saw him score three tries in quick succession. Game on!
Beverley responded quickly with try from the full back, followed by a further try close making it 20-15 at the break.
The home side started well in the second half and scored a quick try but WPL responded immediately as their captain scored two tries in five minutes. Beverley hit back with two tries followed by a couple more from WPL’s other stand out player in the back row.
This left the game all square with either side a possible winner. WPL pressured the Beverley hard and we camped in their 22. Beverley’s defence held and put great pressure on the WPL backs which eventually resulted in a dropped ball from WPL.
The Beverley boys reacted quickest and fly hacked the ball into the WPL half. It was then a foot race to the ball and with another two kicks saw Beverley score the winning try in the dying seconds.
A hard fought and exhilarating game played in great spirit, even in the poor conditions. Try scorers were Tom Rea (3), Max Bayes (1), Jack Charles (3) and Ryan Westerman (1).
Man of the Match was Tom Rea with pass of the week going to Will Parkinson and tackle of the week to Alex Argent-Moss.
