Match Report

High flying Beverley visited near neighbours in Hull on Saturday and were brought to earth with a vengeance by bottom of the table Hullensians. This was a real horror show by the Beavers who looked like a pale imitation of the team which has been playing some fine rugby so far this season. They seemed to lack any game plan and displayed a distinct lack of enthusiasm all afternoon.

On the other hand Hullensians played with spirit and no little skill which belied their lowly league position. Beverley had no answer to the powerful running of the home side’s centre Dom Bloomfield or the sniping and work rate of scrum halfTom Sowden. True they were helped by Beverley’s woeful tackling attempts and Bloomfield in particular broke the theirline nearly every time he received the ball.

Hullensians opened the scoring in the 12th minute when they were awarded a penalty deep in their own 22. Taking advantage of the strong back wind, Martinson promptly found touch with the kick 65 metres downfield and the subsequent line out led to a try in the corner (5-0).

Martinson followed this up 5 minutes later with a try when he floated through a gap a mile wide in the Beverley centre (10-0).

This appeared to wake Beverley up at last and we had a 7 minute period of pressure when they retained possession well and played some of the rugby that we know they are capable of. James Graham went over in the corner to reduce the arrears (10-5). However it was not to last and Hullensiansscored a fine try by speedy winger Josh Langford (15-5). Martinson converted to make it 17-5 and things were looking decidedly grim for Beverley. They became even worse when centre Chris Harding scored another try on half time to make the score 22-5 and earn a bonus point

The second half began as the first ended with Hullensiansdominating proceedings and sure enough after only 5 minutes they scored a pushover try which was converted to make the score 29-5.

That completed the scoring and game was played out with Beverley attacking consistently, aided it has to be said, by the strengthening back wind, but the seemed to be devoid of any ideas of how to break down the excellent Hullensians defence.

At last the referee ended the visitor’s supporters misery with the final whistle at 29-5 to the home side.

This was surely Beverley’s worst performance for many years, but credit to Hullensians they thoroughly deserved their victory and hopefully will use it as the launching pad to climb up the table. As for Beverley, this maybe a negative report but it is very difficult to find a positive in the display except that it was a one off terrible “day at the office” and it is unlikely to be repeated soon.
