Beverley Under 14 Hull Ionians Away - Won 0-29

Match Report

BEVERLEY Under-14’s travelled to Hull Ionians enjoyed mixed fortunes in their triple header with the hosts and last year’s Yorkshire Cup winners West Park Leeds on Sunday.

Beverley kicked off against West Park enjoying the better of the early exchanges but failing to make the most of their chances as they were beaten 22-10.

After early Beverley pressure,  the larger West Park pack began to make some hard yards into the Beavers half and despite excellent defence the Leeds winger crossed for a try.

Beverley bounced straight back and a dominant scrum enabled the back row to push on and fine running by Rodgers made it 5-5.

West Park were not having it their own way but a dropped ball allowed them to move within yards of the Beverley line. Strong defence led by Eagle won the Beavers a turnover but a knock on put them on the back foot once again.

The front row of Spence, Reid and Hopson pushed the opposition back but a pick up and drive from the number 8 allowed West Park to win a ruck and make it 10-5.

There followed some consistent play from Beverley and some hard running marshalled by scrum half Scanlan saw play move to West Park’s 22. Consistent pressure saw wingers Webb and Carling press hard only to be brought down short. However, from a resulting ruck prop Hopson charged on and crossed to leave it 10-all.

Beverley again held the kick-off well, but when a green shirt got himself isolated on the 10 yard line the West Park pack stripped the ball from him. Some hard direct running down a short side saw them again within 20 yards of the Beverley line.

The Leeds lads where most comfortable here and Beverley were showing signs of tiring, when a hard running winger broke 2 tackles to score wide out the score moved to 15-10 with two minutes to play.

Beverley chased the kick off hard, but West Park sealed it off and took control, running hard but again meeting a hard tackling Beverley side.

When an ambitious Beverley backline decided on a blitz defence the West Park fly half spotted it well and dropped a lovely chip kick in behind the rush. A foot chase was on and full back Foreman did well to make his tackle and slow the ball down.

The Beverley lads just could not get back in time and the Leeds side crossed for a final converted try.

After West Park had beaten the hosts it was Beverley Under-14’s who took the field again to defeat the rebuilding Hull Ionians side 29-0.

The game started well and Beverley pressed hard from the off against their old rivals.

Beverley played with composure and executed their game plan well, sending Carling on the left wing over for three tries.

Whilst Webb on the right wing had a stiffer opposite number and didn’t cross himself he did send Kian Dugdale in with a beautiful offload.

The front five again had the ascendancy winning  two against the head and it was only fitting that captain and tireless second row Hurst would have the last word as he touched down between the sticks. T

hat was until the Beverley boys elected tight head prop Spence to take the conversion.

The coaching team looked on with a bemused look as the prop scored his first points of the day.
